Canal+ to Compensate Subscribers for Price Hike: Find Out How!

Great news for affected subscribers: As part of a class action initiated by UFC-Que Choisir in April 2021, Canal+ has agreed to provide a lump-sum compensation to customers who faced unapproved tariff increases in 2018.

A Long-standing Dispute Resolved

The dispute initially stemmed from a unilateral modification of certain Canal+ offers in 2018, which resulted in a monthly increase of 2 to 5 euros for many subscribers. UFC-Que Choisir had criticized the lack of transparency in the information provided to customers and the absence of genuine consent to these new rates. Backed by the consumer association, subscribers thus took the matter to court through a class action lawsuit, a procedure that allows for the collective defense of the rights of numerous consumers.

Canal+ and UFC-Que Choisir eventually reached a compromise, avoiding a lengthy and uncertain legal process. The agreement includes compensation ranging from 20 to 75 euros per subscriber, depending on various factors such as the subscriber’s tenure, duration of subscription, and the level of the price increase.

Like any amicable settlement before judgment, this agreement concludes the dispute without any admission of fault by Canal+, but with a clear intention from both parties to resolve the issue while offering some form of redress to consumers.

How to Claim Your Compensation

Eligible subscribers can submit their claims online through a dedicated portal, set up jointly by Canal+ and UFC-Que Choisir. The association states that the procedure is designed to be quick, cost-free, and accessible to all affected consumers.

On its website, UFC-Que Choisir expresses satisfaction with the agreement, noting it demonstrates the value of class actions as a tool to protect consumer rights against major players in the audiovisual sector.
