A Correction Glitch That’s Testing My Patience
It’s always the same scenario. I begin typing a new sentence, whether on WhatsApp, iMessage, or anywhere in iOS. My keyboard initially capitalizes the first word. Then, a split second later, auto-correct kicks in and replaces the word with its lowercase version, as if the capital was a mistake. This forces me to go back and manually capitalize the word. It’s not only annoying but also a waste of time. The most frustrating part is that this problem has followed me: I first noticed it on my iPhone 16 Pro Max, then on my iPhone Air, and it has returned on my current iPhone 17 Pro Max.
I’ve Tried Everything, Nothing Works
Obviously, the first thing I checked was the basic setting. In Settings > General > Keyboard, my ‘Auto-Capitalization’ is indeed enabled. I’ve toggled it off and on, but to no avail—the erroneous behavior persists. The next step, widely recommended online, is to reset the keyboard dictionary (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary). I’ve done this multiple times, and it doesn’t make any difference. I’ve also tried creating text replacement shortcuts, but that’s more of a band-aid than a real solution. In reality, the only thing that works is replacing the iOS keyboard with a third-party one, like Google’s, but honestly, that’s hardly a satisfying solution…
What About You?
This kind of minor bug really gets on my nerves. We’re not dealing with a complex AI function, but the basics of text input: capitalizing the first letter of a sentence. The fact that auto-correction is actively learning incorrect behavior and that resetting the dictionary doesn’t fix it is quite troubling. Apple boasts about its AI, but if it can’t handle a basic grammar rule without backsliding, that’s a problem. The most annoying part is seeing that I’m not the only one.
So now, the question is for you. Are you also experiencing this issue? Have you noticed that your sentence starts are losing their capitals for no reason? And most importantly, if you’ve managed to permanently rid yourself of this problem, how did you do it?
