For those who might be unfamiliar with the show, the premise is straightforward. Singles get to know each other in “pods” where they can talk but not see each other. If they fall in love, they can propose.
It’s only after getting engaged that they finally see each other, and then they take their relationship into the “real world” to see if they can survive everyday challenges up to the wedding day. I have a feeling you might be totally into this concept (or not).
Teddy Riner and Luthna Plocus, a “Model” Couple
To host this French version, Netflix has chosen the well-loved and famous couple, judoka Teddy Riner and his wife, Luthna Plocus. Together since 2007, they will guide the participants and act as a “model couple,” a role that Netflix replicates in most countries where the show is adapted.
A Major Move for Netflix
Hiring a celebrity as popular as Teddy Riner is a major move for Netflix, ensuring extensive media coverage for the premiere set for September 10.
This isn’t Riner’s first foray into television; he previously co-hosted “La Course des champions” on France 2, though with mixed success.
What’s the Word?
Netflix’s strategy is well-oiled. Take an international format that has succeeded, adapt it locally, and attach a hugely popular celebrity to generate buzz. Choosing Teddy Riner is particularly clever: he brings a wholesome, family-friendly image to a reality show genre that can sometimes be quite edgy. It’s a way to make the concept more palatable.
