Can the Ultra-Customizable South Korean Game InZOI Dethrone The Sims?

After 25 years of dominating the market, The Sims may have met its match. Developed by South Korean studio Krafton, InZOI is a life simulation game that aims to revolutionize the genre with ultra-realistic graphics and a deep dive into Korean culture. Released this past Friday, March 28, in early access on Steam, the game quickly climbed to the top of the sales charts, subsequently boosting Krafton’s stock by 6% on the Seoul Stock Exchange.

A Deep Dive into Korean Culture

Drawing inspiration from the renowned Electronic Arts franchise, InZOI elevates avatar customization to new heights. Utilizing Unreal Engine 5, the game offers highly detailed facial modeling, down to the specifics like under-eye bag shapes and the exact color of the iris. On the hardware side, this photorealistic display requires a robust setup, with a recommended RTX 3070 for the best experience.

But InZOI is more than just a prettier version of The Sims. The game also taps into the global craze for Korean culture—including K-pop, dramas, and cuisine—by featuring environments and interactions that mirror everyday life in South Korea. Players can pursue careers in K-pop, hang out in karaoke bars and traditional restaurants, or manage their social media reputations.

“A player who gets into a public brawl might be criticized or supported online, affecting their in-game relationships,” explains Kim Hyung-jun, the project director. This system adds a new social and interactive dimension to the life simulation genre.

A Strong Start, Yet a Long Road Ahead

While initial reactions to the game are positive, there is still much work to be done. The creator admits that InZOI is only about 20% complete and that it will take more time to truly compete with The Sims 4, which is already celebrating its 10th anniversary.

However, the immediate success on Steam indicates that there is a strong demand. It remains to be seen whether Krafton will capitalize on this momentum to make InZOI a formidable contender against The Sims 5, currently under development at EA.
