Breaking: Nintendo Halts Switch 2 Pre-Orders Due to Tariff Issues!

Originally scheduled for April 9, 2025, the pre-orders for the Switch 2 have been temporarily halted in the United States, Nintendo confirmed in a statement to GameSpot. The suspension is due to the potential impact of new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, which could affect the previously announced retail price of the console.

Reassessment of Pricing?

The unveiling of the Switch 2 on April 2 revealed an initial price set at 470 euros (approximately $450 before taxes). This pricing strategy was already quite bold! However, the implementation of a 54% tariff on electronic products imported from China could significantly alter the situation, forcing Nintendo to revisit its pricing strategy.

Nintendo has expressed its intention to assess the impact of the new tariffs before setting a final price or officially opening pre-orders. As of now, the release date is still set for June 5, 2025, but uncertainty remains regarding the final price.

A Production Line Entirely in China

The Switch 2 is fully manufactured and assembled in China, placing it squarely under the purview of the Trump administration’s protectionist measures. It’s important to note that the new tariffs announced in early April also affect smartphones, computers, and other electronic devices, potentially impacting many brands, including Apple. A price adjustment seems likely, especially since Nintendo generates a significant portion of its console sales in the American market.

For retailers, this suspension comes at the worst possible time: marketing campaigns were already underway, promotional spaces had been booked, and reservation systems were activated across several outlets. This freeze on pre-orders could also affect global production and distribution forecasts if a price reevaluation were to be extended to other regions.
