A Peugeot e-2008 Priced Like a New Citroën Ami
This offer certainly catches the eye: for a price slightly above that of a new Citroën Ami, this 2020 Peugeot e-2008 GT is up for sale on Mobile.de by a dealer in the Netherlands. $11,398 for a compact, fully electric SUV could attract a buyer looking for an affordable vehicle. However, a significant detail immediately stands out: the car has 241,929 km on it, which, according to Automobile Propre, makes it the most driven Peugeot e-2008 electric currently for sale in Europe. And it must be said, mileage has an even greater impact on an electric vehicle than on a gasoline one, when considering battery life.
A Worn-Out Battery
The listing is upfront, not trying to hide the battery’s condition (a point often unclear in the electric used car market, even at dealerships selling used cars). With a Moba certificate, the seller indicates that the usable capacity of the battery has dropped to 34.7 kWh from 46.3, which is 75% of the initial capacity. As a result, the WLTP range drops from 320 km to about 240 km, and in practice, it’s more like 210 km in mixed use and 140 km on the highway, according to the calculations, which are certainly accurate, from our colleagues.
Expired Warranty, Potential High Cost
Initially, the manufacturer’s warranty covers the battery up to 8 years or 160,000 km, provided it retains at least 70% of its capacity. This model has far exceeded that threshold, so no warranty applies anymore to the vehicle’s most expensive component. The buyer faces two choices: keep the current battery, accepting its limitations, or replace it, which represents an expense of over $10,000, and sometimes even more, as we discuss in a recent article we published.
Offers to Approach with Caution
Marketed as a great deal, this listing mainly highlights the economic drawbacks of a highly mileage electric vehicle. At this price, one might find less worn models, still under warranty. This e-2008 could be suitable for limited urban use, but the investment becomes risky if one considers an inevitable battery replacement in the near future. Personally, I’m thinking of making an offer at $8,000.
