WhatsApp Finally Launches on iPad: Get the Details!

After yesterday’s cryptic hint, the wait is finally over—despite the long years of anticipation. It’s official: WhatsApp Messenger now has a native version for the iPad.

Meta announced just this Tuesday the long-awaited launch of the app on Apple’s tablet, over a decade after the messaging service debuted in 2009 and following the release of the first iPad in 2010. The app is available for download on the App Store as of today.

A True iPad App, At Last

Until now, using WhatsApp on an iPad was a bit of a workaround: users had to rely on the web version in a browser or use a third-party app. Now, users can enjoy a native experience designed for iPadOS, taking full advantage of the tablet’s larger screen.

WhatsApp for iPad supports most of the features available on the iPhone, including audio and video calls with up to 32 participants, the ability to use both front and rear cameras, and screen sharing during a call.

Moreover, the app leverages specific features unique to the iPad, such as Stage Manager for seamless multitasking, and Split View and Slide Over to use WhatsApp alongside other apps like Safari, YouTube, Mail, etc. This is a significant advantage for professionals or heavy users who multitask while staying connected.

It’s been years since users started clamoring for an iPad version of WhatsApp. In 2022, Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp at Meta, acknowledged the real demand for an iPadOS app and mentioned that it was “in the works.” Two years later, that project has come to fruition. The news was subtly announced this Monday via the WhatsApp account on X, with the actual release following shortly after.

What About Instagram?

This launch might signify a turning point in Meta’s strategy for iPad apps. While Facebook already has a dedicated iPad version, and WhatsApp has just entered the field, there’s also talk of an optimized Instagram app for iPad in development, according to persistent rumors. However, for now, Meta has not provided any official hints on this matter.
