Apple Pulls Controversial Ad Urging Parents to Buy Macs – Was It Too Embarrassing?

Apple’s recent marketing campaign aimed at students hit an unexpected snag. The highly successful video titled “The Parent Presentation” – showcasing students trying to convince their parents to invest in a Mac for their studies – was discreetly set to private on the company’s official YouTube channel. It’s a shame because it was quite humorous!

A Quiet But Noticeable Disappearance

Released just a few days ago to coincide with the launch of the “Back to School 2025” promotion, this seven-minute comedic video served as a sort of tutorial for students on how to “effectively persuade” their parents to choose a Mac over a PC. Alongside, Apple even offered a downloadable slideshow called “The Parent Presentation,” featuring 45 points arguing why a Mac is superior for academic purposes.

However, as of this weekend, the video is no longer available on Apple’s YouTube channel, and the PowerPoint presentation, which was initially featured prominently at the top of the student page, has been demoted to the bottom of the website. This move raises questions: Is it a change in strategy, or perhaps an attempt to quietly quell a brewing controversy? Or could it be a clever publicity stunt to generate even more discussion about it? Apple has yet to make an official statement on the matter.

Mixed Reactions on Social Media

While the campaign entertained some viewers, others found it awkward, or even cringeworthy. On platforms like X and Reddit, several users criticized the video’s tone, describing it as “odd,” “forced,” or even “slightly disturbing” in its portrayal of parent-child relationships. Some perceived it as being out of sync with Apple’s usual premium, understated, and serious image.

It is not uncommon for Apple to pull content that is either unconvincing or poorly received by the audience. Recall the iPad Pro “Crush!” advertisement from May 2024, which was withdrawn after an uproar over its symbolic crushing of cultural objects with a hydraulic press.

Despite targeting a key demographic – students, to whom Apple offers attractive deals each summer – the 2025 promotion allowed students buying a Mac or an iPad to receive free AirPods or an Apple Pencil. With stiff competition, especially from Chromebooks and refurbished Macs, Apple seems determined to attract customers by any means necessary, even if it sometimes misses the mark. Now, all that remains is to see whether Apple will restore the video online or if it will join the list of ephemeral marketing campaigns the brand would rather forget.
