HBO Max has made the decision to cancel “Duster” just a week after airing its final episode. Despite receiving positive reviews, the series, a creative collaboration between J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, failed to attract a significant audience.

Praise from Critics but Lack of Viewers
The abrupt cancellation of “Duster” reflects the harsh realities of streaming today. The series marked a notable return for Josh Holloway (famous for his role as Sawyer in Lost) as a leading actor and garnered an impressive 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was well-received by those who watched it, earning an 83% audience approval rating.
However, the viewership numbers weren’t strong enough. “Duster” struggled to break into the top 10 most-watched shows on the platform, a critical metric for streaming services nowadays. Without significant buzz or a large audience, HBO Max opted not to renew the series for a second season.
An Arduous Journey Comes to an End
It seems the project was troubled from the start. Ordered in 2020, the series took five years to develop, which is unusually long.
It appeared the series’ fate was sealed well before its release, as actor contracts had expired and were not renewed. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. had even attempted to quietly shop the series to other platforms before the cancellation was officially announced, but found no takers.
Another Setback for J.J. Abrams’ Mega-Deal
The cancellation of “Duster” marks another disappointment in the partnership between J.J. Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, and Warner Media. Since their major exclusive deal was signed in 2019, few projects have come to fruition.
Several highly anticipated series, such as adaptations of “Justice League Dark” and a derivative of “The Shining,” have been scrapped during development. “Duster” was one of the few projects that actually made it to screen.
What’s the Takeaway?
The cancellation symbolizes the new era of streaming where there is little patience for a quality series to find its audience. Today, if a program doesn’t immediately generate significant buzz and viewership, it is swiftly axed. The emphasis is now purely on short-term profitability.
This strategy starkly contrasts with Apple TV+, which has often given its series more time to gain a foothold. J.J. Abrams has recently seen more success on Apple’s platform, with shows like “Presumed Innocent” performing well. Apple’s approach of “creative patience” starkly contrasts with the ruthless pragmatism of platforms like HBO Max, which is unfortunate for the diversity of programming. Does it frustrate you to see quality series canceled so quickly?
