A New Standard for AI Disclosure
Spotify now urges creators to adhere to the standard developed by DDEX, a professional organization that sets metadata standards in the music industry. Since the beginning of the year, DDEX has made it possible to specify whether a track was entirely, partially, or not at all designed with AI.
This information, embedded into the files upon submission, will gradually be displayed in the app. We will start making them visible on Spotify,
confirmed Sam Duboff, head of music marketing, adding that over 15 labels and distributors have already committed to following this standard.
The system is based on voluntary participation. Spotify does not require artists or publishers to declare the use of AI, but hopes that increased transparency will help foster a trustful atmosphere.
Balancing Responsibility and Misuse
Initially, people had a binary view: it’s either AI or it isn’t
, explained Charlie Hellman, head of music at Spotify. But in reality, it’s used in many different ways, at every step of the process
.
The platform emphasizes that it does not want to punish
artists who use AI in an authentic and responsible manner. The case of the AI-generated band The Velvet Sundown, which hit over 3 million streams in June, highlighted the phenomenon’s scope. However, Duboff notes that tracks fully generated by AI represent a tiny percentage of listens and rarely achieve significant success.
Combating Abuse and Deepfakes
Aside from promoting transparency, Spotify is also addressing malicious actors who use AI to manipulate its search and recommendation algorithms. The company has updated its regulations to specify that unauthorized AI use, deepfakes, or any imitation without consent are now strictly prohibited. Content in violation will be removed from the platform.
With these measures, Spotify aims to strike a balance: encouraging the innovation that AI brings to musical creation, while protecting artists, labels, and listeners from practices that threaten the integrity of its ecosystem.
