For years, speculation about a Tesla-branded smartphone has circulated among tech enthusiasts. Given Elon Musk’s history of shaking up industries—from PayPal to Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink—many assumed that smartphones would be his next conquest. The idea made sense: with Tesla’s massive fan base and Musk’s involvement in satellite communication, a Tesla phone seemed like a natural evolution. However, Musk himself has put an end to these rumors.

Tesla Won’t Make a Phone… Unless It Has To
The possibility of a Tesla smartphone was dismissed directly by Musk during an interview with Joe Rogan. He stated, “Tesla is better positioned than any company in the world to create a new phone that is neither Android nor iPhone. But it’s not something we want to do unless we have no choice.”
This statement raises an interesting question: What could possibly “force” Tesla to enter the smartphone market? Musk clarified that if major tech companies—Apple and Google-Android—started imposing extreme restrictions, such as censorship, security breaches, or monopolistic control, he would consider launching an alternative. But for now, he sees no pressing need to disrupt the mobile industry.
A Tesla Phone Could Have Made Sense

At first glance, a Tesla phone seemed like a logical step. Musk’s Starlink satellite network is already revolutionizing internet connectivity, bringing high-speed internet to remote areas worldwide. A smartphone designed to integrate seamlessly with Starlink could have been a game-changer, eliminating traditional mobile network limitations and offering global coverage without the usual dead zones of electromagnetic wave-based networks.
However, recent technological advancements have made this unnecessary. Starlink now offers “direct-to-cell” technology, allowing existing smartphones to connect directly to its satellites. Instead of developing a brand-new device, Musk has opted for a more efficient solution: expanding connectivity to all compatible smartphones rather than introducing a Tesla-branded phone.
Could Musk Still Enter the Smartphone Market?
While Musk has firmly dismissed the idea of a Tesla phone, he has not ruled out the possibility of launching a phone through another company he owns—or even founding a new business specifically for this purpose. Given his track record of entering industries when least expected, the door remains slightly open for a surprise move in the future.

For now, though, Tesla fans hoping for a Musk-designed smartphone will have to settle for their existing devices—enhanced, perhaps, by Starlink connectivity.
