Kanye West’s Shopify Store Shut Down After Controversial T-Shirt Hits Market

Kanye West continues to stir up controversy, and this time, his Yeezy website is paying the price. After listing T-shirts featuring a swastika, the artist’s online store was shut down by Shopify. Following this, his talent agency dropped him, and a former employee has filed a harassment lawsuit against him. Here’s a look back at a tumultuous week.

Shopify Severs Ties

Visitors to yeezy.com are now greeted with a brief message: This store is unavailable. Shopify has confirmed that it closed the store, stating that West had violated its terms of service. Officially, the platform attributes this decision to a risk of fraud rather than the content of the T-shirt, but internally, the management acknowledges that selling Nazi-themed apparel is not exactly an acceptable business practice (no kidding?)

The shutdown occurred after a local ad aired during the Super Bowl, where West was seen taking a selfie in a dentist’s chair to promote his site. Those who followed the link discovered a white T-shirt with a swastika being sold for $20. The response was immediate: anti-racist organizations, public figures, and social media users quickly condemned the grim sale.

Simultaneous Harassment Lawsuit

On Tuesday, a former Yeezy employee filed a lawsuit in California, claiming she was harassed and discriminated against by West due to her gender and Jewish religion. Among the allegations were antisemitic messages, including a text saying Welcome to your first day at Hitler. The plaintiff also mentioned the receipt of pornographic content and aggressive text messages.

Simultaneously, 33&West, the talent agency that represented West, announced the end of their partnership. His agent, Daniel McCartney, stated on Instagram that neither he nor his company could endorse such remarks.

A Continuing Downward Spiral

These recent controversies are part of a long destructive spiral for Kanye West. Since 2022, his antisemitic outbursts have cost him contracts with Adidas, Balenciaga, Gap, and several agencies and law firms. His partnership with Adidas was worth nearly $1.5 billion, and his fortune, once estimated at over a billion, has plummeted to about $400 million.

Yet, far from calming the situation, West seems to be diving deeper into provocation. Between his bizarre posts on X and his attempts to return to fashion, he continues to push the boundaries of the distasteful. It remains to be seen how many doors will remain open to him after this.
