Apple has recently taken a significant step by expanding access to its streaming service. Apple TV+ is now available on Android smartphones and tablets. This development, which was anticipated just a few hours ago, is now a reality. This new feature will allow users to enjoy Apple TV+ content through the native Apple TV app, without the need for a web browser.

A Native App for Enhanced User Experience
Until now, Android users who wanted to watch Apple TV+ shows and movies had to do so through a web browser (somewhat like Netflix subscribers on a Mac… just saying). With this new app, Apple aims to provide a smoother and more intuitive experience, similar to what is already available on iPhone, iPad, and of course, on Apple TV itself.
The Apple TV app for Android now completes Apple’s ecosystem, which already includes dedicated apps on various platforms, including smart TVs and devices running Android TV.
For now, the app is limited to Apple TV+ content, MLS Season Pass, and MLB Friday Night Baseball. Users can now download the Apple TV app and enjoy popular Apple TV+ series and movies such as Severance, Ted Lasso, Silo, and The Morning Show. Starting February 22, soccer fans can subscribe to the MLS Season Pass to enjoy the return of the American championship.
Apple Aims to Attract More Subscribers
By making its streaming service available to Android smartphones and tablets, Apple is looking to reach a broader audience. The goal is to increase the number of subscribers to Apple TV+, which is available for $9.99 per month. To encourage Android users to try out the platform, Apple is including a free trial period for new subscribers.
This app joins other services that Apple has already adapted for Android, including Apple Music and Apple Music Classical, further strengthening the brand’s presence on Google’s OS.
A Step Towards a More Open Strategy?
While Apple has traditionally limited its services to its own ecosystem, this expansion to Android could indicate a more open strategy. Following Apple Music, the introduction of Apple TV+ on Android might signify a desire to reach a broader audience and, through this, increase its service-related revenues, a rapidly growing sector for the Cupertino-based company.
With this new app, Apple undoubtedly hopes to more effectively compete with platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video, which have a strong presence on Android. It remains to be seen whether this move will appeal to users of Google’s operating system and boost subscriptions to Apple TV+.
