Leaked Prototype Reveals Foldable iPad or MacBook with Under-Screen Face ID!

There’s a buzz that’s been building for months and now it’s escalating: Apple is reportedly deep into developing an 18.8-inch foldable device. Recent leaks suggest a prototype featuring Face ID embedded under the screen.

An 18.8-Inch Foldable Screen… But What’s It For?

It all started when analyst Ross Young talked last year about Apple’s interest in a very large foldable screen, around 20 inches. He described a novel concept: a hybrid MacBook x iPad, acting as a laptop with a virtual keyboard when folded, and as a monitor paired with an external keyboard when unfolded.

Subsequently, Ming-Chi Kuo also found clues in the supply chain pointing to a foldable screen of around 20.3 inches, later adjusted to 18.8 inches. Ross Young then confirmed this downsizing with the very specific figure of 18.76 inches.

A Prototype with Under-Screen Face ID

The latest scoop comes from Digital Chat Station, a well-known leaker on Weibo, who recently spilled precise details about the telephoto lenses on the iPhone 16 Pro and the camera sensors on the upcoming iPhone.

According to him, an 18.8-inch foldable iPad Pro prototype is being tested, incorporating a novel technology for Apple: Guoguo also has a foldable iPad Pro, an engineering machine with an 18.8-inch screen, using a metal over-structured lens, mainly integrating Face ID Rx and Tx for 3D facial recognition under the screen.

In other words, Face ID would be integrated directly under the screen, thus eliminating any visible notch or Dynamic Island. This is not far-fetched and would represent a significant technological leap that Apple has been exploring for years through various patents. There had been previous rumors about incorporating Touch ID on the side button of a foldable iPhone.

iPad or MacBook?

The big question now is which category this new product will fall into: the iPad or the Mac. The all-screen format naturally suggests an iPad Pro, especially since Apple has already mastered the touch interface and gestures suitable for such a device.

On the other hand, a foldable MacBook/Air/Pro/Other would require a complete rethinking of the user experience, especially in terms of the virtual keyboard. And it would acknowledge the existence of this hybrid that shall not be named: the Touchscreen Mac! Currently, Apple has patented solutions to make a non-physical keyboard more ergonomic, simulate the feel of keys with advanced haptic feedback, and optimize touch typing to minimize errors.

A Risky, Yet Appealing Bet for Apple Enthusiasts

With a price tag exceeding $2,000, Apple is making a bold gamble. However, as Min-Chi Kuo points out, the brand is counting on its loyal user base to turn this foldable model into a flagship product, and a must-have for those looking to combine cutting-edge technology with the Apple ecosystem.
