Beijing 2025: Humanoid Robots to Run Half-Marathon With Humans!

On April 13th, Beijing is set to host a groundbreaking event: a half-marathon featuring 12,000 human runners and humanoid robots! This pioneering event is already generating significant buzz, discussing both technological feats and the ethical boundaries of artificial intelligence.

A Race Between Humans and Machines

The event, organized by Beijing’s Economic and Technological Development Zone, promises to be historic. Across the 13 miles, human athletes will compete, but they will share the course with humanoid robots. However, the aim is not to have them compete directly against each other.

Indeed, the primary goal is to showcase advancements in robotics and spark a discussion on the physical and cognitive capabilities of machines. It’s also a chance for China to display its progress in this field! We hope this event will not only highlight the achievements of the humanoid robotics industry but also initiate discussions and enhance public understanding of robot capabilities, explained Li Quan, Deputy Director of the technological zone.

Strict Rules for the Robot Runners

Ultimately, the robots won’t just need to cross the finish line to participate. The machines must walk or run on two legs—wheel-based robots are not allowed.

The participating teams, whether they are from tech companies, universities, or robotics clubs, will also need to manage a crucial aspect: the battery. If a robot runs out of power and the team opts to change it, a 10-minute penalty will be added to their final time. Thus, endurance and energy management will be key factors.

According to Liu Weiliang, Deputy Director of Beijing’s Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, Beijing’s technological innovation is accelerating in areas such as large-scale artificial intelligence models, multi-source information perception, and natural human-machine interaction,.

Prizes for the Fastest and Most Popular

Although robots and humans won’t be competing in the exact same lane, they will all aim for the same goal: to win. The first three finishers in the race, be they human or machine, will receive a prize.

For robots, specific prizes will be awarded in three categories:
Course Completion for machines that successfully finish the half-marathon.
Best Endurance for those that last the longest without a battery change.
Most Popular Robot: a fun addition that might just set social media abuzz.

A Technological Advance… and an Open Debate

This half-marathon is more than just a technical showcase. It also raises deeper questions about the integration of artificial intelligence into our daily lives and its limitations. If robots can already run, what might tomorrow hold? Meanwhile, mark your calendars for April 13 in Beijing for this extraordinary event.

The Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone, rapidly transforming into a hub dedicated to artificial intelligence, announced last week its plan to recruit up to 10,000 robots from robotics companies within the next two years, including over 1,000 specifically humanoid robots.
