Say Goodbye to Annoying Reflections
Adobe has rolled out an experimental feature known as Reflection Removal, now accessible in Camera Raw and soon to be available in Lightroom. Originally introduced as Project See Through
at Adobe Max 2023, this tool utilizes artificial intelligence to analyze and separate reflections from the background in images. The aim is to correct photos distorted by reflections from shop windows, airplane windows, and other reflective surfaces without the need for specialized photography equipment.
Technology Built on Advanced Learning
The AI model behind Reflection Removal is based on a database containing thousands of reflection-free photos, used to create composite images that simulate reflections. These composites have trained the algorithm to identify and isolate the intended reflections. Through a reinforcement process, where outputs were rewarded or penalized based on their accuracy, the model has become increasingly effective. However, Adobe notes that this tool performs best on reflections that cover the entire field of view and may struggle with complex or smaller reflections.
Features and Limitations of Reflection Removal
The tool includes a slider that allows users to adjust the level of reflection treatment, from complete removal to partial isolation. Currently, it is limited to RAW files. Support for JPEG and HEIC formats is expected in the future. Results might be imperfect, especially in night scenes or on uneven reflective surfaces such as water or car bodies, but it’s worth a try, and the model is expected to improve. To use it, simply enable the AI functions in the Adobe Camera Raw preferences panel and restart the application. The tool will then appear under the remove
tab (the eraser icon on the right). It’s important to clarify that the AI used here is not generative; the goal is not to create or fabricate new content for your photo, but merely to correct it.
Increasing Integration of AI in Adobe Tools
Reflection Removal is part of Adobe’s ongoing effort to incorporate AI into its software suite, similar to what has been done with Firefly for generating images and videos. While the tool isn’t perfect, it opens up exciting possibilities for enhancing existing photos or addressing specific challenges, such as photographing through windows or capturing storefronts. Hopefully, the support for JPEG and HEIC formats will be implemented soon, as currently, its usability is somewhat limited.
