AirTag 2 Unveiled: What We Know About Apple’s Latest Tracker

Released in April 2021, Apple’s AirTag quickly became a popular accessory for locating items via the Apple Find My network. However, almost four years after its debut, the tiny tracker hasn’t seen any hardware updates, though there have been some software tweaks. This might soon change: multiple consistent rumors now suggest the upcoming release of AirTag 2, potentially as early as May or June 2025.

Slight Change in Design

There are no leaks suggesting a major aesthetic change; the AirTag 2 is expected to retain its recognizable compact, circular shape. While some rumors—or perhaps wishful thinking—hint at new color options, Apple does not seem inclined to reduce the device’s thickness, despite some criticisms regarding its bulkiness. The tracker is notably challenging to fit into certain wallet designs, but Apple maintains that making it slimmer would compromise its performance and detectability. As with the original model, the responsibility for offering slimmer alternatives seems to be left to others.

Regarding battery life, specifics are unclear, and Apple might continue to use the CR2032 flat battery, which lasts about a year, give or take.

Next-Generation UWB Chip for Significantly Improved Range

While the design of the AirTag 2 might not evolve much, Apple plans to introduce three significant upgrades: a new UWB chip and enhanced range. The major change would involve the Ultra Wideband chip. The first-generation AirTag features the U1 chip, effective within a 10 to 15-meter range for precision finding.

The new version would benefit from a more advanced UWB chip—the same one integrated into the iPhone 15/16 and Apple Watch Series 9/10—capable of reaching up to 60 meters. This significant enhancement should make it easier to locate items in large spaces or through obstacles, while maintaining the centimeter-level accuracy that Apple’s technology is known for.

Enhanced Measures Against Unwanted Tracking

While the AirTag has proven to be a useful everyday accessory, it has also faced criticism for potential misuse for harassment or unauthorized surveillance. Despite existing measures (alerts, warning sounds, a dedicated Android app), Apple is reportedly planning to go further with this second generation.

According to several sources, the company aims to make it impossible to physically disable the speaker—an exploit previously noted in malicious use cases. Other improvements are also being considered, with new tracking detection protocols potentially integrated into iOS 19.

Potential Reveal at WWDC 2025?

According to Mark Gurman, the second-generation AirTags—codenamed B589—might launch around the middle of the year. Latest reports indicate that Apple is currently finalizing tests with subcontractors in Asia. Leaker Kosutami, often well-informed about Apple accessories, also suggests a launch in May or June 2025, aligning with the WWDC schedule, which starts on June 9 this year.

In any event, we might also hope for smarter alerts. For instance, an AirTag 2 that is more “contextual” could send notifications based on the distance, the type of object tracked, or the duration of separation. Moreover, with enhanced protection against abusive tracking—quicker detection, clearer alerts, an inoperable speaker (or one that requires a code)—Apple might also consider a multi-user mode, perhaps for family members.
