AI: The New Tool for Cyber Scams
Artificial intelligence has become a favorite tool among cybercriminals to deceive individuals. Generative AI is now employed to craft more believable scams, which are faster to produce and thus harder to detect.
We are now seeing phishing campaigns written in flawless French, deepfake videos mimicking public figures, and fake chatbots on scam websites that simulate natural conversations.
The most striking example is the network known as MediPhantom, discovered in spring 2025. It consists of over 5,000 fake online pharmacy sites, all designed using AI tools. The scams are particularly cunning: fake order interfaces, automatically generated fake customer reviews. These virtual assistants, also powered by AI, answer victims’ questions to reassure them before stealing their banking details.
The Rise of “Scam-Yourself Attacks”
Among emerging techniques, there is a significant increase in “Scam-Yourself Attacks”. Here, the victim themselves installs malware, thinking they are updating software or checking their system.
These scams often appear as fake security messages or trapped YouTube or TikTok tutorials that prompt downloading a file, usually through a rigged CAPTCHA page.
GenDigital has blocked more than 4 million of these attempts in the quarter.
Financial Frauds and Crypto on Mobile
Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting smartphones. Some malware, like Crocodilus, directly targets banking and crypto apps.

They exploit accessibility features to display fake login windows, almost indistinguishable from the real ones. The goal: to steal usernames, passwords, or 2FA codes.
GenDigital also highlights a campaign by the CryptoCore group. Using deepfake videos on YouTube, the scammers managed to steal nearly $3.8 million through over 2,200 fraudulent transactions.
