A YouTube Video Expedition Gone Wrong
Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, a 24-year-old American with apparently poor judgment, was arrested in late March after he tried to make contact with the Sentinelese people, who live on North Sentinel Island in the Indian Ocean. His goal? To create content for his YouTube channel. He landed on the island equipped with a GoPro, a can of Diet Coke, a coconut, and a plan to capture an interaction. However, this island is strictly off-limits as per Indian authorities, who have been protecting this secluded tribe for thousands of years.
An Utterly Illegal Project
According to police reports, Polyakov meticulously planned his expedition, studying tide patterns, using GPS navigation, and approaching from a secluded beach. He spent about an hour on the island, whistling to get attention, but received no visible response. He left his “offerings,” took some sand as a souvenir, filmed the entire ordeal, and then left the island. He was reported shortly thereafter by fishermen and arrested in Port Blair, the capital of the archipelago.
This was not his first attempt: he had made two previous trips in 2023 and early 2025 that brought him near the island. He is also known to have illegally filmed other tribes, such as the Jarawa. His channel, Neo-Orientalist, features a few videos shot in Afghanistan and other high-risk areas. Adventure seems to be his driving force, even at the cost of flouting basic rules.

Experts agree: such actions could endanger the survival of the Sentinelese. Even simple contact with a virus carrier can be disastrous. These populations have no immunity to modern diseases. Organizations like Survival International have called the act “irresponsible” and noted that even the flu could decimate the entire community.
Polyakov is currently in temporary custody, facing up to five years in jail and a fine. Authorities hope this case will serve as a deterrent.
