Apple has recently turned off its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) system for users in the United Kingdom. This feature provided end-to-end encryption, meaning only the account holders could access their data on iCloud. Not even Apple could view this information.

End of End-to-End Encryption for UK Users
The move comes in response to a request from the UK government, under the Investigatory Powers Act. This law enables authorities to compel companies to hand over data as part of legal investigations. Instead of creating a backdoor to allow such access, Apple chose to eliminate this service in the UK.
As of February 21, 2025, British users are no longer able to activate ADP. Those who had already enabled this feature will soon receive instructions on how to disable it if they wish to continue using iCloud as usual. Without this service, the data will no longer have the same level of protection, and Apple will be able to access it if legally requested.
Concerns Over a Risky Decision
This decision has led to a wave of negative responses, particularly from cybersecurity experts. Professor Alan Woodward from the University of Surrey commented that this action weakens the online security of British users. He believes it does not enhance protection against cyber threats, but rather increases the risk of hacking.
In the United States, some lawmakers have also voiced their concerns. They worry that this move could undermine the information-sharing agreements between the US and the UK, posing a threat to international data security. Additionally, there is concern that other countries might consider similar measures.
Apple’s Continued Commitment to Data Privacy
Apple expressed disappointment in an official statement, reaffirming its commitment to not creating backdoors into its products. The company emphasized that its goal remains to provide the highest level of security for its users.
While the ADP’s end-to-end encryption is no longer available to British users, it remains active in other countries. Some services like iMessage, FaceTime, and iCloud Keychain continue to be protected by this system, even in the UK.
