Historically, Apple’s interactions with governmental authorities have shown a degree of inconsistency. On one hand, it steadfastly denies any requests to unlock iPhones, citing privacy as an inviolable principle. On the other, it proudly highlights its cooperation with law enforcement whenever it serves to promote or utilize its products.

Global Police Summit
According to Forbes, Apple has hosted closed-door conferences for global law enforcement agencies twice in the past five years, specifically in 2019 and 2023. The purpose of these gatherings, held either at its Cupertino headquarters or the Elk Grove campus in Sacramento County, was to discuss the optimal uses of its products. Despite ongoing strains with the FBI since the 2015 San Bernardino incident, Apple has been actively fostering better relationships with law enforcement agencies through these special meetings. Reportedly, employees from about fifty police departments worldwide (from seven different countries) were present. Forbes based its report on various emails, testimonials, and invitations.
How Do Police Benefit from Apple’s Products?
Apple has indeed been proactive in California, working to encourage law enforcement agencies to adopt its products. These meetings have explored numerous initiatives, particularly in leveraging iPhones, Macs, CarPlay, and even the Vision Pro! For instance, the headset could potentially replace traditional monitoring screens in real-time operation centers, and CarPlay might offer a viable alternative to embedded laptops in police vehicles with specifically designed applications. Apple has also promoted the use of its emergency satellite features in remote or poorly covered areas—valuable during field operations.
Regardless, the future of this initiative remains to be seen. It was overseen by Gary Oldham, who recently left the company under somewhat unclear circumstances. Interestingly, Mr. Oldham had a background in law enforcement! He once mentioned,
“In a number of countries, I have increased our market share to 80% or more and achieved a 100% market share in public safety in four countries.”
