Why Introduce a New Modem So Soon?
It’s hardly surprising. Apple consistently works on its future chips years before they are released. The C2 aims to outperform its predecessor by providing faster and more reliable 5G connectivity, while also being more energy-efficient.
To recap, the C1, which powers the iPhone 16, was touted as Apple’s most energy-efficient modem ever. This enhancement is expected to set a new record for battery life in a 6.1-inch iPhone, surpassing even the more expensive standard iPhone 16.
However, when it comes to speed, the true capabilities of the C1 are still under scrutiny. Early estimates suggest it might be slower than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75, which is used in other iPhone models. Apple has made it clear that the C1 is just the beginning, and the C2 is expected to take performance even further. Could this be the start of damage control over somewhat lackluster 5G performance in the iPhone 16? We’ll see once we get a hands-on experience.
Apple Moves Toward Technological Independence
Additionally, as we’ve mentioned, Apple is plotting another significant shift with the expected release of the iPhone 17 in late 2025: the introduction of its own Wi-Fi chips. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this move isn’t just about cost savings; it’s also aimed at enhancing connectivity across all Apple devices. Another rumor even hints at a refresh of the Apple TV, which could become the hub of this connected ecosystem.
A Blow to Qualcomm?
For years, Apple has been working to wean itself off Qualcomm modems, but even with its own chips, it remains tied to Qualcomm patents, and Qualcomm continues to earn royalties. However, the impact of this transition is starting to show: following the announcement of these tests, Qualcomm and Broadcom stocks slightly fell while Apple’s stock saw a small rise.
In short, although the C2 might not debut until the iPhone 18, Apple seems determined to gain full control over its components, and trust me, we’ll be talking about this a lot more because it’s incredibly strategic for the brand, and for our future devices.
