Apple’s Secret Project: A Chatbot to Save Siri!

Following a series of delays, public apologies, and even internal restructuring, Apple is still not ready to give up on Siri. It appears that the company is internally testing a new tool named Veritas. This experimental app is reminiscent of ChatGPT and could lay the groundwork for the new Siri expected in 2026 with iOS 26.4.

The Truth Lies Beyond

According to Bloomberg, Veritas (Latin for “truth”) is an iOS application currently available only to Apple’s teams. Unlike Siri, Veritas functions as a true conversational chatbot, capable of remembering the context of discussions, maintaining prolonged conversations, and revisiting past inquiries.

This approach allows engineers to speed up testing of new features without the constraints of direct integration into Siri. A key focus area is contextual search: enabling the assistant to leverage personal data (emails, text messages, calendar, etc.) to deliver truly personalized results.

Siri Losing Momentum

Apple Intelligence, Cupertino’s major AI showcase, had a lukewarm and unconvincing launch, especially since few functional features were released on schedule. Worse, some had issues right from the start. For instance, by January 2025, some users were already complaining about problems with notification summaries, forcing Apple to partially disable the feature.

As for the Siri overhaul, it was initially scheduled for iOS 18.4 in March 2025, but was postponed. While the update did introduce new tools related to Apple Intelligence, Siri was notably absent. In April, Apple finally acknowledged a delay until further notice (although there’s talk of iOS 26.4).

In response to these challenges, Apple has restructured its teams. John Giannandrea, who had overseen Siri for several years, stepped down in favor of Mike Rockwell, the former head of Vision Pro. This is a strong signal: Apple intends to align its AI efforts more closely with those of its spatial headset, considered a strategic laboratory.

Toward Siri 2.0 by 2026?

The goal is clear: a Siri capable of sustaining real conversations and intelligently interacting with the entire Apple ecosystem. Veritas, currently limited to internal testing, thus represents a long-term bet: a vision of Siri 2.0 that would not just execute commands, but become a proactive and genuinely useful daily assistant. However, the path is fraught with obstacles, especially as competitors (OpenAI, Google Gemini, and even Samsung with Gauss) are advancing very rapidly.
