A Show Full of Surprises
The Studio, Seth Rogen’s satirical comedy on Apple TV+, is filled with guest stars—famous personalities all playing themselves. One of the most noteworthy is Ted Sarandos, the CEO of Netflix—an intriguing choice on a competing platform.
This casting was not entirely without constraints. Apparently, Apple had suggested to Rogen that Sarandos be replaced by its own CEO, Tim Cook. This proposal was politely yet resolutely declined by the creator.
Seth Rogen Turns Down Tim Cook!
At the premiere of The Studio at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in March, Seth Rogen indeed confirmed the story: They asked if we could use Tim Cook instead, and we said no,
he told Business Insider.
This refusal is quite uncommon and highlights a moment of creative independence in an environment often tightly controlled by platforms, underscoring the satirical and free tone that the director strives to maintain.

A Sharp Nod to Hollywood and Streaming Platforms
Indeed, in the series, Ted Sarandos’ cameo plays on self-mockery, in a humorous scene where he encounters a fictional studio executive (played by Seth Rogen himself) next to a urinal during an awards gala. Ted Sarandos portrays a highly exaggerated version of himself, discussing power and recognition in Hollywood.
The decision to feature the head of a direct competitor where Apple would have preferred a more institutional nod clearly shows Rogen’s intention to push the satire further. One might imagine that we narrowly avoided a scene of Tim Cook at the Golden Globes restroom…. Or perhaps a desire not to overly critique the hand that feeds.
