This announcement coincides with the introduction of this format on the iPhone 17 Pro, a surprising addition to a phone since it also requires a significant amount of storage space. It’s no coincidence that Apple is offering 2TB on this model this year.
Blackmagic Introduces Professional Dock for iPhone 17 Pro
Another announcement from the manufacturer is the launch of the Blackmagic Camera ProDock, a new dock that adds professional camera connections to the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.
Features include genlock, external timecode, an HDMI output, headphone and microphone inputs, and recording to external disks, among others! Since the Blackmagic Camera ProDock is compatible with the Blackmagic Camera app, you can outfit the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max for professional cinema production,
Blackmagic states.
One question that intrigues me: Does Apple finally offer real monitoring through sound feedback on the USB port? The unique compatibility with the iPhone 17 Pro suggests that there have been changes between the 16 Pro and the 17 Pro… It would also be interesting to be able to record onto an external medium with all possible formats, including HEVC from Apple’s app, but this won’t be known until it can be tested.
The Blackmagic Camera ProDock is now available for $295 USD through the Apple Online Store and Blackmagic Design retailers worldwide.
