Launched to promote the repair of electronic, household, and gardening devices, the repair bonus marked its second anniversary on December 15, 2024. Despite notable growth, its impact remains somewhat limited.
Modest Growth
In its second year, the amount of aid distributed through the repair bonus has doubled compared to its inaugural year. During the 2023-2024 period, 574,163 devices were repaired, which is less than one in twenty devices taking advantage of the bonus.
Indeed, 18% of the 154 million euro budget allocated to eco-organizations for the year 2024 has been spent. The number of repair points certified by QualiRépar (those authorized to submit subsidy requests) increased from 4,468 to 8,018, representing about one in three repairers.
These statistics, provided by Ecologic
, one of the eco-organizations overseeing the scheme, show improvement but also reflect the program’s struggle to attract widespread consumer interest. To find a certified repairer near you, simply visit this website!
Why the Limited Impact?
Many consumers are either unaware of this initiative or do not know how to take advantage of it. Despite the bonus, the cost can still be a deterrent, especially for lower-value items. Purchasing new devices is often favored over repairing, partly due to the rapid cycle of perceived obsolescence. The scheme relies on a certified network which can be sparse in rural areas or certain regions.
The repair bonus is a financial aid intended to reduce repair costs for appliances, in partnership with certified repairers. The goal is to promote a circular economy by extending the lifespan of equipment and reducing electronic waste. The amount varies depending on the type of appliance, generally between 10 € and 45 € per repair. Regarding funding, manufacturers contribute to eco-organizations like Ecologic, which then distribute the aids.
Certainly, abetter promotion of the scheme could encourage more consumers to use it. Also, ensuring easy access to certified professionals, even in less served areas (or areas less accessible to elderly people), would help.
Obviously, a more generous subsidy could make repairs more competitive compared to buying new (mobile phones that receive 25 € in aid for repairs to the battery, microphone, speaker, and camera lens are now eligible for “accidental breakage”). Finally, manufacturers should also do their part by promoting products that are designed to be more easily repairable.
