Update Withdrawn Without Official Explanation
Apple has quietly pulled the plug on iPadOS 17.7.7, the latest update for iPads that aren’t compatible with iPadOS 18. This means users are no longer able to install this version, although it may still appear in their settings. The affected devices include the 6th generation iPad, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro from the second generation.
While Apple has not officially commented on the reasons behind this decision, multiple user accounts suggest significant app functionality issues post-update. On US forums and Reddit, numerous users have reported that their apps reset with every restart following the update to iPadOS 17.7.7. Apps such as Wikipedia, YouTube, Letterboxd, and DuckDuckGo would act as though they had just been installed, requiring users to log in again each time.
Measures like resetting settings, turning off restrictions, or even performing a full restore without backup, do not seem to fix the issue. This situation has therefore become a frustrating inconvenience for users, especially those relying on their iPads for work or educational purposes.
iPadOS 17.7.7: An Anticipated Fix
It is likely that Apple has halted the distribution of iPadOS 17.7.7 while they work on correcting these issues, with plans to release an updated version soon. Currently, no timeline has been shared for when this might occur, but a corrective update could be issued swiftly considering the volume of negative feedback.
Users who have not yet updated their iPad are advised to wait (since the update is no longer available anyway), while those who have already updated have no immediate fix except for a possible downgrade, which is complicated, particularly if the previous version is no longer signed.
This situation highlights the challenges Apple faces in maintaining software support for older devices while moving forward with major new system versions. In the meantime, users of older iPads are left in a difficult position…
