Shopping on platforms like Temu and Shein has become a go-to for bargain hunters, offering trendy items at unbeatable prices. However, recent findings reveal a darker side to these e-commerce giants: certain products sold on these platforms may contain toxic chemicals—some at alarmingly high levels. Dangerous chemicals found far above legal limits
In August, South Korean authorities conducted a sweeping investigation into products from Shein, Temu, and other e-commerce sites like AliExpress. The results were startling: numerous items contained cancer-causing chemicals and other hazardous substances, often far exceeding legal thresholds.
For example, a pair of women’s shoes sold by Shein was found to contain phthalates—chemicals used to soften plastics—at levels 229 times above the legal limit. Similarly, several Shein caps tested positive for excessive amounts of formaldehyde, a toxic substance commonly found in household products. Even nail polish sold on the platform showed elevated levels of 1,4-Dioxane, a known carcinogen that can harm the liver, exceeding safety limits by 3.6 times.
The situation wasn’t much better at Temu. Authorities discovered lead levels 11 times higher than permitted in a pair of sandals. These findings are particularly alarming because such items are worn directly against the skin, increasing the risk of chemical exposure. “Buyers should pay special attention to products like sandals and leather hats, which come into direct contact with the body,” warned Kim Tae-hee, a lead investigator, in a statement to AFP.
Heightened scrutiny on online platforms
The rising popularity of Chinese e-commerce platforms like Temu and Shein has prompted stricter inspections by customs authorities worldwide. Originally focused on preventing counterfeit goods, these checks have expanded to include health and safety risks due to the growing evidence of harmful chemicals in imported products.
In the European Union, Shein has been under increased surveillance since April 2024 as part of the Digital Services Act (DSA), a new framework aimed at regulating large online platforms. The European Commission has mandated measures to protect consumers, particularly against unsafe or illegal products. Temu was added to the list of heavily monitored platforms in July, further intensifying the scrutiny on these retailers.
The cost of fast fashion and overconsumption
These findings reignite the debate about fast fashion and the environmental and social costs tied to it. While platforms like Shein and Temu make trendy items affordable, they also contribute to pollution and unsustainable consumption.
