A New Chapter
Often regarded as the key brain behind ChatGPT, Mira Murati has now left OpenAI after working at the startup for over six and a half years. She even replaced Sam Altman as the head of technology just a year ago.
In her announcement, Murati shared the letter she sent to her colleagues. After considerable thought, I have made the tough decision to leave OpenAI… There’s never a perfect time to step away from a place you love, but now feels right
.
Why Leave?
However, she does not appear to harbor any resentment towards OpenAI’s co-founders, and she expressed gratitude towards Sam Altman and Greg Brockman for their trust and support. The six and a half years I spent with OpenAI’s team were an extraordinary privilege
.
The reasons behind her departure are still somewhat unclear. She mentioned feeling the need for the time and space necessary for my own journey
while ensuring that she would do everything in my power to ensure a smooth transition, while maintaining the momentum we have built
.
What About Ethics?
She did not mention any discord at the executive level, particularly regarding AI development. She did, however, mention OpenAI o1, a more conscious version of ChatGPT. A new era,
she wrote, without finishing the thought or discussing potential consequences.
It’s important to note that several individuals have left the startup in recent months: Ilya Sutskever – one of its co-founders – (last May), Jan Leike – the chief researcher – and Gretchen Krueger. However, all three cited concerns about the ethical and societal implications of AI advancements.
