The acclaimed prequel to Dune, focusing on the origins of the Bene Gesserit, will return for a second season. The announcement comes before the airing of the first season’s finale.
Anticipated Continuation for Dune: Prophecy
HBO has confirmed that Dune: Prophecy will be renewed for a second season. The news was shared during a press conference a few days before the final episode of the first season, which is scheduled to air on December 22, 2024. According to HBO, the series premiere on November 17 has already attracted 15 million viewers worldwide on the Max platform.
Alison Schapker, the showrunner of the series, expressed her gratitude: We are thankful to our partners and excited to continue working with this incredible team. This new season will allow us to further develop the story.
The Origins of the Bene Gesserit Order
For those who haven’t caught up yet, the series is set 10,000 years before the events of Denis Villeneuve’s films, and is based on the novel Sisterhood of Dune, co-authored by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. It follows Valya and Tula Harkonnen, two sisters portrayed by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams. These characters battle forces that threaten the future of humanity while laying the groundwork for the Bene Gesserit order, a pivotal organization in the Dune universe.
The series also delves into the origins of the Harkonnen family, often depicted as villains in the universe. The aim is to unfold what led this family to become one of the emblems of oppression in the main works.
A Robust Production Team
The series is produced by HBO and Legendary Television. Alison Schapker, serving as both showrunner and executive producer, is joined by Diane Ademu-John, co-developer of the series, and Anna Foerster, director of several episodes. Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, and other members connected to Frank Herbert’s legacy are also involved in the production.
The cast includes, in addition to Watson and Williams, actors like Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, and Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, who play characters with key roles in the storyline.
An Expanding Franchise
This renewal confirms HBO’s commitment to expanding the Dune universe. With a third film adaptation in the works and a video game based on Arrakis under development, Dune: Prophecy is part of a broader strategy to broaden the franchise’s reach. The release date for season 2 is still to be announced.
