Apple is reportedly gearing up for something big in 2025, and it’s not the iPhone 16. Rumors are swirling about a new, slimmer, and lighter smartphone that could be called the iPhone Air. While details are still emerging, respected journalist Mark Gurman recently added fuel to the fire in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, suggesting that instead of an iPhone 17 Plus, Apple will likely introduce the iPhone 17 Air next year.
This new device would find its niche between the standard iPhone 17 and the more premium iPhone 17 Pro, much like the MacBook Air sits between the MacBook and MacBook Pro in Apple’s laptop lineup. The iPhone Air is expected to stand out with its sleek, lightweight design, though it will likely share similar technical specs with the standard iPhone 17. The Pro models will continue to offer better performance and superior camera capabilities, with the Pro Max being the only option for those who prefer a larger screen.
iPhone Air in 2025, iPhone Air Pro by 2027?
Gurman speculates that Apple’s pitch for the iPhone Air will be something like this: “If you want something sleeker than the standard iPhone—but don’t need the extra performance, larger screen, or advanced cameras of a Pro model—you can have a device that looks much cooler while still offering the same specs as a regular iPhone.”
Looking ahead, Apple aims to eventually create an iPhone Air with features on par with the Pro models. However, such a device isn’t expected to hit the market until at least 2027. In the meantime, the introduction of the iPhone 17 Air, alongside a new iPhone SE, is likely to drive growth for Apple next year. By comparison, 2024 and the iPhone 16 lineup seem to be shaping up as a transitional generation, with few major innovations beyond the introduction of Apple Intelligence.
As for the long-rumored foldable iPhone and iPad, Apple is indeed working on them, but it’s unclear when they’ll be ready for the market. The foldable iPad appears to be the priority and could make its debut before the foldable iPhone.
