Kit Harington has once again shared his thoughts on the controversial finale of Game of Thrones, admitting that it failed to meet expectations.
In the spring of 2019, fans across the globe eagerly awaited the conclusion of Game of Thrones, HBO’s groundbreaking series. However, what was meant to be a grand finale turned into a major disappointment for many. The final season, consisting of just six episodes, left a significant portion of the audience angry and frustrated, with complaints about a rushed ending, incoherent storylines, and poorly handled character arcs. While the prequel series House of the Dragon has somewhat managed to mend the wounds, the sting of that finale still lingers for both fans and some cast members.
One of those cast members is Kit Harington, who portrayed Jon Snow. Though Jon Snow’s journey ended in exile, Harington has been vocal about his disinterest in watching House of the Dragon. Recently, during a promotional interview for the third season of Industry, Harington revisited the Game of Thrones finale, offering insight into why it didn’t live up to the hype.
The Final Word on the Ending
During his interview with GQ, Harington reflected on his time with Game of Thrones and specifically on the series’ much-debated conclusion. He acknowledged the challenges the cast and crew faced and why they were unable to deliver a more satisfying ending.
“I think the problem with the Game of Thrones finale was that we were all so exhausted that we simply couldn’t continue any longer,” Harington explained. “I understand why some people felt it was rushed, and I might even agree with them. But I believe there was no other option but to stop. When I look at pictures of myself from that final season, I look utterly drained, at my breaking point. I didn’t have the energy for another season. […] Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think some mistakes were made, in terms of storytelling, especially towards the end. There were some bold choices that just didn’t land.”
Harington didn’t shy away from addressing the intense backlash the final season received. What began as a cultural phenomenon beloved by millions ended with a wave of criticism that was often harsh and, at times, overwhelming.
“I came into this show, and everyone loved it; I left, and suddenly, everyone hated it. I genuinely wondered what had happened. At the time, I felt pressured to maintain this image of perfection and ‘coolness’ about what I was doing, but the reality was that I was terrified of almost everything.”
The Personal Toll
For Harington, the backlash wasn’t the only challenge he faced. He has been open about his personal struggles during that period, including battling alcoholism and experiencing suicidal thoughts. The pressure of fame and the demands of the show left him emotionally and physically exhausted, leading him to seek help through rehab. At just 32 years old, it’s no surprise that Harington needed to move on from the intense world of Game of Thrones.
As for Jon Snow, it appears that fans won’t be seeing him in his own spin-off series, as HBO has reportedly changed its plans. However, before the third season of House of the Dragon premieres, the network is set to release another Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, scheduled for summer 2025.
In the end, while the finale of Game of Thrones may not have satisfied everyone, Kit Harington’s reflections remind us of the immense pressure and exhaustion faced by those who brought the epic tale to life.
