Ghost in the Shell Returns in 2026 with a Brand-New Series!

The Japanese studio Science Saru is gearing up for a new animated adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, set for release in 2026. The project gathers a creative team from series such as Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and Godzilla Singular Point, aiming to kickstart a new era in this well-known cyberpunk franchise.

Brought to You by Science Saru

The animation studio Science Saru is currently developing a new Ghost in the Shell TV series, slated for 2026. This fresh adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s manga, which has been adapted multiple times since the 1990s, will be directed by Toma Kimura, also known as Mokochan. He has previously worked as a storyboard artist and assistant director on The Heike Story and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. This will mark his first full directorial effort.

The screenplay is penned by EnJoe Toh, a writer and screenwriter already involved in projects like Godzilla Singular Point and The Empire of Corpses. Shuhei Handa, who has contributed to Little Witch Academia and Spriggan, is both designing the characters and directing the animation.

A Fresh Start

According to Masamune Shirow, this adaptation could be seen as “the first installment of a second generation” for Ghost in the Shell. The author touches on the origins of the original manga, published in 1989, and suggests that this version would refresh the universe for a new audience. Depending on how one counts the adaptations (movies, series, OVAs, etc.), this could be considered the fourth or the tenth iteration, depending on the criteria used.

A First Teaser Released

A teaser has been shared on the franchise’s social media channels. It features snippets of animation in progress, as well as storyboards of the main characters, particularly Motoko Kusanagi and Batou. The video is set to a soundtrack that could be associated with the theme music.

An official illustration has also been released, providing a first look at the universe and the chosen graphical style. It notably includes the Fuchikoma tank, a recurring element of the franchise.

The story takes place in a future where humans are enhanced with cybernetic implants. Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg and member of a special unit, investigates cybercriminals capable of remotely manipulating minds. The plot explores the tensions between body, consciousness, and technology, presenting a fantastic license that we encourage you to check out if you haven’t already.
