Google Maps to Analyze Your Screenshots – But Why?

Google Maps introduces a new smart feature powered by Gemini, which will automatically identify locations from screenshots taken on the iPhone. This feature is set to be a convenient tool for effortlessly enhancing your lists of places, and is also perfect for planning trips and outings.

Automatically Enhanced Place Lists

Until now, Google Maps allowed users to manually create lists of places to visit. Moving forward, the iOS app will automatically add locations to a list called Screenshots.

This new list will be located under the You tab in the app. It will compile places identified from screenshots stored on the iPhone, whether they are from web pages, social media, or travel apps that users want to remember.

Practically speaking, Gemini – Google’s AI – will analyze the screenshots (and organize them into the corresponding list) to detect location information, often text or place names shown in the images.

This feature is based on the idea that many people prefer to take screenshots to save information instead of taking notes. Google Maps leverages this habit to facilitate list creation without manual input.

How Does It Work?

To use this feature, users will need to have the latest version of Google Maps and opt into the feature (it is not enabled by default) and allow Google Maps to access the photos on their device through a system prompt.

When the app recognizes a location in a screenshot, it will notify the user. The user can then confirm the images and locations to add to the list, which will subsequently appear on the main map. Those who prefer not to give access to all their photos can also manually add screenshots to the list.

The rollout begins gradually starting this Thursday, primarily for iPhone users who use American English.
