This surge in subscribers highlights Google’s intent to lessen its reliance on advertising revenue and dominate the market with Gemini, amidst fierce competition from Microsoft, Apple, and other AI service providers.

AI Drives Google One’s Substantial Growth

As of May 2025, Google One has reached 150 million subscribers, marking a 50% increase in just one year. Back in February 2024, the platform had 100 million subscribers. This remarkable growth coincided with the launch of the AI Premium plan priced at $21.99 per month. This plan offers access to Google’s advanced AI tools, including Gemini Advanced, which is integrated into Gmail, Google Docs, and other Workspace services. It also includes NotebookLM Plus and other AI experiments. The plan has been so successful that it already accounts for several million users, although Google has not disclosed the exact proportion of the total subscribers.

More Than Just Storage

Initially, Google One primarily served to expand storage space on Drive, Gmail, and Photos. Plans started at $1.99 per month for 100 GB, went up to $9.99 per month for 2 TB, and extended up to 30 TB. Google also added features like automatic backup for Android and iOS, dedicated technical support, and perks on the Google Store. But with the addition of artificial intelligence tools, Google One has transformed from a simple cloud service to a strategic AI-assisted productivity hub.

Alphabet Aims to Reduce Ad Dependency

The rise of Google One is part of a broader strategy. Alphabet still heavily depends on advertising, which accounted for over 75% of its $350 billion revenue in 2024. By focusing on subscriptions, the company aims to stabilize its income while catering to the evolving digital habits.
