An Ill-Timed Morning Stroll
The incident occurred one morning just before 7:30 am. Portia Moore was organizing a photo shoot with her two children, Belle (4 years old) and Preston (20 months), at the Tidal Basin amidst the peak cherry blossom season. She was joined by her husband, Damien Thomas, and photographer Briana Inell.
As the children were posing, their father noticed a passerby in the background. He tried to alert his wife, but she was focused on capturing the perfect shot. It wasn’t until after the session, while reviewing the photos, that the couple realized the passerby was none other than Barack Obama.
Former President’s Reaction on Instagram
In one of the photos, Obama can be seen casually walking behind the children, hands in pockets, wearing sunglasses. The photographer had not noticed him at the time, busy framing the children with the Washington Monument and cherry blossoms in the background.
After the photo was posted on Instagram, Barack Obama commented: Preston and Belle, I hope you enjoyed the peak bloom. Sorry for photobombing your picture.
He also shared a few pictures from his stroll, mentioning that he still likes to play tourist
.
A Consistently Popular Tourist Destination
The Tidal Basin draws over a million visitors each year during the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The cherry trees, a gift from Japan in 1912, are highly sought-after for photography, especially at sunrise, like on that day.
Briana Inell, who often photographs families in this setting, mentioned that she is used to dealing with passersby who accidentally appear in her shots. This time, it was neither a tourist nor a jogger, but a former president. Quite the surprise!
The Moore family, who live in Falls Church, Virginia, plans to print the photo. Even though their children are too young to understand who Barack Obama is, their parents are eager to share the story with them. It’s the kind of photo they’ll likely bring out every spring!
