“I Was Moved,” Final Fantasy Creator Reflects on His Collaboration with FF Studio

After a long break from game development, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the legendary creator of Final Fantasy, has found himself working once again with his former company, Square Enix, more than 20 years after his departure. This time, he’s overseeing the porting of his own game, Fantasian, onto consoles and PCs. It’s a deeply emotional return for Sakaguchi, who has been open about his thoughts on this nostalgic collaboration.

A Surprising Return to Square Enix

Sakaguchi’s decision to return to Square Enix, the company he founded the iconic Final Fantasy series with, wasn’t something he had planned. In 2021, Apple secured an exclusive release of Fantasian on Apple Arcade, marking a milestone for Sakaguchi’s studio, Mistwalker. The game, a role-playing adventure, was well-received but limited to Apple’s platform, leaving many players frustrated that they couldn’t enjoy it on other systems. Enter Naoki Yoshida, the director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV Online, who offered his expertise in getting the game ported to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. This collaborative effort led to Sakaguchi working with Square Enix again, a reunion that was full of emotion for the creator.

“I was moved by the strange cycle that is life,” Sakaguchi said, reflecting on his return to Square Enix after nearly 40 years. For him, this collaboration felt like a full-circle moment—one that he had never anticipated when he first started his career. “It’s a path I’ve walked with great conviction, so in the end, this may be where I inevitably return.”

Bringing Fantasian to New Platforms

When Fantasian launched on December 5, 2024, it expanded beyond Apple Arcade to reach a broader audience, now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series. This expansion was made possible by Yoshida’s team, and Sakaguchi was deeply appreciative of the effort. “It felt like a return to my roots,” he said. Fantasian was designed with the idea that it could be his last work before retiring, so seeing it make its way onto these new platforms felt both sentimental and significant.

The game’s re-release isn’t just a technical achievement; it’s also an emotional one for Sakaguchi, who had spent so much of his career developing iconic games for Nintendo consoles. In his early days with Square Enix, Final Fantasy was synonymous with the NES (Famicom), and it felt fitting to return to that legacy, even if indirectly. “The Famicom helped me grow as a creator,” he shared. “It was a platform that shaped my vision of gaming, and it’s nice to bring my work back to a Nintendo console.”

Sakaguchi’s Future Plans: A Final Masterpiece

Although Sakaguchi initially considered Fantasian to be his last project, his plans have since evolved. He has now set his sights on creating an even more ambitious title, which he promises will be his ultimate game. In an interview with The Verge, Sakaguchi revealed that this final project will be a tribute to one of his most beloved titles: Final Fantasy VI. “We want to create something that feels both old and new at the same time,” he said, expressing his desire to create a game that reflects the legacy of Final Fantasy VI, widely considered one of the best, if not the best, entries in the franchise.

This new title could either be a direct sequel to Fantasian or a completely new franchise, as Sakaguchi has often preferred to launch fresh, original IPs with Mistwalker. No matter the direction, fans are eagerly awaiting what will be the final chapter of a truly legendary career.

In the end, Sakaguchi’s return to Square Enix, as well as his continued creative endeavors, serves as a reminder of the impact one man has had on the world of gaming. As he works on his final game, it’s clear that his passion for storytelling and creating immersive worlds remains as strong as ever.
