Almost Too Light?
Although it’s just a dummy, YouTube personality Lewis George Hilsenteger couldn’t hide his astonishment at the size of the iPhone 17 Air. It feels futuristic,
he remarked as he handled it, immediately noting the lightness and the incredibly thin frame. This is a stark contrast to the heavier models like the iPhone Pro and Pro Max, known for their sturdiness as well as their increasing weight over the years.
In the video, he measures the model: just 5.65 mm thick for the iPhone 17 Air, compared to a mock iPhone 17 Pro Max at 8.75 mm thick that he also had on hand. The difference is both visible and tangible. It really feels like half,
he said…
A Risky Bet on Durability?
However, this attractive design raises some concerns. The thinness of the device may suggest a compromise in its durability. On the flip side, it could also mean increased fragility and more complicated repairs. It’s certain that some will put it through extreme crash tests come September.
For now, it’s clearly just a non-functional prototype based on pre-production industrial designs. But it clearly outlines Apple’s plan: to craft an iPhone Air with a more compact, ultra-thin form, likely aimed at those turned off by the bulkiness of current models. However, it doesn’t seem to reduce the size overall (so, no joy for fans of smaller, one-hand-friendly iPhones this year either)…
Despite some skepticism, Lew is impressed with this physical first look: Once you hold the 17 Air, it’s hard to imagine wanting to buy any other model,
he says. Everyone is now left waiting to see if this new iPhone will live up to the hype that’s based solely on its form factor. Will the iPhone 17 Air represent a significant shift in Apple’s smartphone design? The answer will come in the fall of 2025.
