Is Apple Ditching MagSafe on the iPhone 16? Here’s What You Need to Know!

The iPhone 16e is now available, but as you might have noticed, it lacks MagSafe. This shift from previous iPhone models since the iPhone 12 has sparked quite a bit of discussion. In response to questions, Apple has shared the reasoning behind excluding this magnetic charging technology from its new budget-friendly smartphone. And the reason is surprisingly… simple.

User Behavior Dictates Design Choices

According to representatives from Apple interviewed by John Gruber of Daring Fireball, the absence of MagSafe on the iPhone 16e is based on a straightforward rationale: the target audience for the 16e apparently prefers wired charging. Most of the target audience for the iPhone 16e exclusively charge their phones by plugging them into a charging cable.

In other words, Apple believes that the users it aims to reach—often those who own older iPhone models—do not use or rarely use wireless charging, and would be even less interested in MagSafe (they wouldn’t need to purchase compatible accessories either).

For this customer segment, the standard Qi charging speed of 7.5 W is considered adequate, unlike the faster MagSafe charging (up to 15 W on most models and 25 W on Pro models).

A Cost-Driven Decision

Although some may see it as a cost-cutting move, Apple insists that this decision was the result of market research. Contrary to initial rumors, the new C1 modem—another novelty of the iPhone 16e—does not interfere with the MagSafe system, a theory quickly dismissed by the brand and accessory manufacturers’ tests.

In reality, the iPhone 16e follows in the footsteps of the iPhone SE, which also did not offer MagSafe compatibility. However, this is indeed the first time Apple has removed this feature from a model since its introduction in 2020.

For die-hard fans of magnetic charging, the only option is to opt for third-party cases with built-in magnets (or else buy another compatible iPhone, which is a strategy in its own right…). However, a crucial point: these cases will not increase the charging speed. The iPhone 16e will remain limited to the 7.5 W power, far from the maximum capabilities of MagSafe.
