Is Apple’s Lag in AI Tech Slowing iOS 18 Adoption Rates?

Although Apple is typically reserved with its data, it has recently released adoption rates for its latest operating systems. This move likely aligns with the upcoming quarterly results presentation! Indeed, although Tim Cook mentioned a record adoption rate for iOS 18.1 last October, the last official figures for iOS 17 date back to February 2024, and for iOS 16 to February 2023!

Steady Yet Promising Adoption Figures

Apple continues to captivate its user base with iOS 18, which features a range of AI-powered tools, enhanced customization options, and boosted security measures. Since its launch, iOS 18 has shown an adoption rate similar to previous versions.

According to Apple’s official data, 76% of iPhones released in the past four years and 68% of all active iPhones are currently running iOS 18. On the iPad front, 63% of recent models and 53% of all units have transitioned to iPadOS 18. These statistics position iOS 18 on par with iOS 17 at a similar stage in its lifecycle, though they indicate a slightly slower uptake compared to the more quickly embraced iOS 16.

For those interested in a direct comparison, here are the official figures for iOS 17 from last year (published in February 2024).

iOS 18: Just Another Update?

This year, iOS 18 introduces several new features: the debut of AI (Apple Intelligence, machine learning-based functions), advanced customization (allowing users even more freedom to arrange their home screens with themes, resizable buttons in the Control Center, and customizable shortcuts on the lock screen—a long-demanded flexibility), and enhancements in messaging (message scheduling, animated effects, emoji reactions, and enhanced privacy).

However, one might be mistaken to expect these results to be higher (at least on the level of iOS 16) with the introduction of AI features. But in reality, users expected more. Moreover, these features are still limited both in terms of hardware and geographic availability.

In fact, there’s still nothing on the European front, not even a beta version, and no Intelligent Siri for many months to come. Meanwhile, the competition is moving quickly, much faster than Apple… In response, the company has appointed a notable figure, Kim Vorrath, to lead its AI department. She is known for rescuing struggling products.
