Ligue 1+ Faces Backlash for Unclear Sales Tactics and Technical Issues, Says UFC-Que Choisir

The launch of the new French soccer streaming platform, Ligue 1+, has been anything but smooth. The consumer association UFC-Que Choisir has sounded the alarm, highlighting significant technical issues and a lack of transparency that has affected many subscribers.

Unable to Watch Matches on TV

The main complaint revolves around a “lack of interoperability” that has taken many customers by surprise. Specifically, those who subscribe to the “complete” package (priced at €14.99/month) through the Ligue 1+ mobile app find themselves unable to watch matches on their television sets.

Their login credentials are not recognized by the TV apps of internet service providers (such as Orange, Free, etc.). Thus, they are forced to watch on smartphones or computers, despite having paid for a multi-screen option. Clearly, this is quite absurd.

The LFP and ISPs Point Fingers

When asked about this issue, the Professional Football League (LFP), which operates the platform, shifts the responsibility onto the ISPs, stating that it is up to them to establish the technical link. On the other hand, Orange responded that this development should be carried out jointly with the LFP, and that it “had not been initiated.” This shifting of blame leaves consumers stranded.

A Lack of Transparency Criticized

For UFC-Que Choisir, the primary problem is a lack of information. At no point during the subscription process through the app is it clearly stated that access on the living room TV box will be unavailable. Customers discover this limitation only after they have paid.

The association also highlights the existence of two different websites for Ligue 1+, which adds to the confusion, and the fact that the terms and conditions are difficult to access.

What’s the Verdict?

After the Mediapro debacle, the launch of Ligue 1+ is a major test for the credibility of the LFP. While initial subscription numbers are promising, these technical issues and lack of clarity tarnish the platform’s image.

The fact that in 2025, a major streaming service does not allow a subscriber to use their credentials on any platform is clearly an anachronism. It’s a practice from another era, at a time when Netflix or Disney+ have made the experience entirely seamless. The launch was evidently rushed, and consumers are paying the price. It is crucial that the LFP addresses these issues soon. Meanwhile, a tip: if you want to watch Ligue 1 on your TV, subscribe through your provider, not through the app.
