My 2024 Favorite Follows Me to the Pool: A Must-See!

My top pick for 2024 is the OpenSwim Pro headset by Shokz. Initially, I was skeptical about using it in water, both in terms of comfort and performance. However, I was genuinely impressed by my new swim lane buddy, which should also appeal to other athletes looking for a reliable and versatile headset.

What is Bone Conduction Technology?

The OpenSwim Pro utilizes bone conduction technology, a topic June covered in her review of the OpenRun Pro. To recap, this technology delivers clear sound while keeping the ears unobstructed, which is a boon for both safety and comfort. Unlike traditional earbuds like the AirPods, bone conduction bypasses the eardrums entirely. Instead of transmitting sound through the air and into the ear canal, this technology sends vibrations directly to the tiny bones in the inner ear. These bones then relay signals to the brain, which interprets them as sound.

These headphones are truly remarkable. The sound quality is impressive both underwater and in open air. They do not block out external sounds—without diminishing the user experience—thus keeping you less isolated and able to respond to ambient noises in potentially hazardous situations or to events requiring your attention, like a car on the road or a call to set the table.

Designed for Athletes, Yet Versatile for All

Technically speaking, they are compatible with Bluetooth and MP3, featuring an integrated 32 GB memory for downloading and playing music independently. Ultra-light (27.3 g) with an IP68 waterproof rating (up to 2 meters for 2 hours), they boast a design tailored for movement, with a flexible band that sits at the back of the head.

You can take them anywhere without worry, especially swimming without fear of losing them (they can be tucked under a swim cap if they slip during flip turns). They also accommodate earplugs for maximum comfort. Out of the water, they prove just as handy for running, cycling, or even working, thanks to their voice amplification mode.

That’s not me…

The only downsides I’ve noticed concern charging. Indeed, it’s important to check the battery level in the mobile app. With a battery life of 9 hours on Bluetooth and 6 hours on MP3, it takes 90 minutes to fully charge. Additionally, you must use the proprietary cable (included in the box or available separately for 10.95 euros).

Finally, using the MP3 format has as many pros as cons since you cannot transfer your playlists from Apple Music or Spotify, and you will need to re-encode your albums (great if you have a stack of CDs, or albums you’ve purchased online, less so if your consumption is mainly through streaming).

With the little case for protection!

My 2024 Crush!

Designed for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts, it offers an impressive immersive audio experience. I was blown away by the sound quality due to the bone conduction, even underwater. It has become an essential companion for both intensive and light swimming sessions. Gone are the days of annoying or slipping earphones during laps! The hoop design also allows it to be worn around the neck, keeping it from getting lost at the bottom of a bag.

This headset ultimately (almost) has it all: it’s light, comfortable, and waterproof. It has been with me over the past few months during many pool sessions, but also at work, or simply out and about. Although it was designed for water sports, its utility has expanded beyond just aquatic use to become an indispensable accessory in my everyday life.
