Seth Rogen’s upcoming satirical comedy, The Studio, is shaping up to be an ambitious endeavor that cleverly blends sharp humor with a meta-commentary on the film industry.
An Unexpected Guest Star
Produced by Apple TV+, the series zeroes in on a faltering movie studio struggling to remain relevant in a culture where the significance of Hollywood films is waning. One of the show’s surprises includes a cameo by Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, a bold move considering the competitive tension between streaming platforms.
Seth Rogen revealed that the head of the streaming giant agreed to the appearance as a personal favor. This unusual collaboration between leaders of two streaming powerhouses highlights a lighter side to the rivalry. The director/producer/actor told Vanity Fair that he didn’t consult with Apple (not even Tim Cook!?) before extending the invitation, opting instead to simply send an email to Ted Sarandos.
In The Studio, Seth Rogen plays Matt Remick, a power-hungry new studio head battling to maintain his clout as movies diminish in cultural significance. The series will feature a host of guest stars including notable Hollywood figures: Martin Scorsese, Zack Snyder, Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), and Adam Scott (Severance). The main cast is equally stellar, featuring Catherine O’Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz, and Chase Sui Wonders
A Multi-Level Satire
Blending genres, The Studio
aims to critique the industry’s obsession with profits and prestige. Seth Rogen has described the series as exploring the plight of a leader slowly losing his standing in a shifting world, a theme that mirrors real-life Hollywood challenges.
The Studio is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on March 28, 2025, with the first two episodes available at launch. The subsequent eight episodes will be released weekly until May 23, 2025. This project marks Seth Rogen’s second collaboration with Apple TV+, following the success of Platonic in 2023, which was renewed for a second season.
