Next Up, the iPad and iPad Air Are Set to Get New Keyboards

Apple has a busy schedule ahead with the highly anticipated iPhone 16 reveal on September 9 and the rollout of the first wave of Mac devices powered by M4 processors expected this fall. But in his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman sheds light on a more understated but exciting update: a new Magic Keyboard designed for Apple’s standard iPad and iPad Air models.

While the focus recently has been on high-end products like the aluminum-clad Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro M4, this refresh will aim for practicality over luxury. The upcoming version for the entry-level and mid-range iPads is expected to retain a silicone finish, similar to what we’ve seen before, but with a few notable upgrades.

Shortcut Keys Coming to the iPad Air?

One of the most intriguing features Gurman mentions is the addition of a row of shortcut keys. This would be a first for the iPad Air, which currently lacks dedicated function keys in its Magic Keyboard. Shortcut keys could significantly improve the user experience, offering quick access to essential functions and making the iPad even more versatile as a laptop replacement.

The new keyboard is likely to come in multiple sizes, replacing both the Magic Keyboard Folio introduced in 2022 with the iPad 10 and the older generation Magic Keyboard, which has been around since 2020 and is compatible with older iPad Pro models and the iPad Air.

Launch Timeline

Although these new keyboards sound like a welcome addition, Gurman suggests we might not see them hit the market until 2025. This delay could be part of Apple’s broader strategy to streamline its detachable keyboard lineup. It’s a move that’s already begun with the recent discontinuation of the aging Smart Keyboards, which still used the now-defunct butterfly switch keys that Apple ditched in its MacBook line some time ago.

As Apple continues to refine its product offerings, it’s clear they’re focusing not only on innovation but also on simplifying and enhancing the user experience. A revamped keyboard might not grab headlines like an iPhone or MacBook, but for iPad users, it could be a game-changer.
