Peugeot continues its quest to dominate the European electric vehicle market with the introduction of the e-408. This crossover, based on the hybrid 408, now features a fully electric powertrain, boasting a range of 453 km with a 58.2 kWh battery.
Is the Range Sufficient?
Manufactured in France, the new Peugeot e-408 offers a 210 horsepower engine and 345 Nm of torque, which allows it to compete with some of its direct competitors. However, its range raises some concerns.
Thanks to its extended wheelbase, the e-408 integrates a larger NMC battery, providing 58.2 kWh of usable energy. This enables the model to achieve a range of just 453 km according to the WLTP cycle. This is slightly inadequate for a family vehicle intended to be the primary car for a household. In a market where range is becoming a key factor, this figure may seem low compared to the Tesla Model 3 Propulsion, which offers 513 km. It might have been more prudent to use the battery from the e3008 (73 kWh), but the platforms differ (eMP2 v3 versus STA_MEDIUM for the E-3008). While Peugeot remains confident despite the competition, this gap could significantly disadvantage the e-408.
Particularly as with a limited recharge capacity of 120 kW, the e-408 takes 30 minutes to charge from 20 to 80%, a relatively long time for a vehicle in this category. It supports up to 11 kW in alternating current.
Challenging Pricing Strategy
The e-408 is priced at €43,900, which places it within the range eligible for ecological bonuses. However, compared to a Tesla Model 3, which starts at €41,490 with a higher range, the e-408 might struggle to attract buyers. Peugeot is relying on advanced features like an integrated route planner and a warranty that can extend up to eight years or 160,000 km to tip the scales. It remains to be seen if these features will be enough to win over consumers.
Unchanged Design
On the outside, the Peugeot e-408 maintains its distinctive fastback profile, with imposing 19-inch wheels and Matrix LED technology lights. Inside, the rear space and trunk volume of 471 liters remain the same as the hybrid versions, making it a suitable choice for families (despite the somewhat limited range mentioned earlier). Peugeot’s renowned i-Cockpit now incorporates artificial intelligence via ChatGPT, enhancing the vehicle’s connected and modern features.
As mentioned, the Peugeot e-408 starts at €43,900 for the Allure trim, while the GT version is available at €45,900. The first deliveries to customers are expected by the end of 2024 or early 2025. In the meantime, the electric sedan will be showcased at the Peugeot stand during the Paris Motor Show from October 14 to 20, 2024. At this event, Peugeot will offer special deals including discounts of up to €5,000.
