Pope Leon XIV: A Digital Era Portrait Unveiled!

Just after 6:00 PM yesterday, white smoke finally billowed from the most watched chimney in the world. An hour later, the Vatican officially named its sovereign pontiff, Robert Francis Prevost. But behind the name Leon XIV, steeped in tradition, hides a pope decidedly in tune with the times. Here’s a portrait of a pontiff in the digital era.

Given the sensitive nature of this article, let’s remember to be kind in the comments.

Online Presence Since 2011

Boasting over 400 posts on X even before his election, Leon XIV represents an unprecedented shift for the Catholic Church: a pope already digitally engaged, influential and unfiltered on social issues.

In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI had already set the stage with his @Pontifex account. However, Leon XIV is the first to assume his role with a personal history of online presence. Under his pseudonym @drprevost on Twitter and later X, he has been posting hundreds of posts since 2011.

While Robert Francis Prevost is seen as a reserved clergyman—described as “rather shy” by the media—he does not shy away from his beliefs. He has repeatedly taken stands on major social, political, and moral debates. His account shows personal, committed, and consistent use of social media, far beyond mere institutional communication.

President Trump extended his congratulations yesterday, but what has particularly recirculated is his February 2025 stance against JD Vance, shared through a news article titled JD Vance is wrong, in response to a controversial statement by the American senator on… love.

No topic seems off-limits so far: he has spoken out against racism in the United States, praised the mobilizations following the death of George Floyd, and urged Church leaders to speak out. More recently, he demanded greater transparency regarding sexual violence in the Church, urging victims to break the silence and condemning a culture of secrecy. He has openly criticized the immigration policies of Donald Trump…

What’s New?

But starting today, everything could change. While Robert Francis Prevost was active on social media, what will happen with Leon XIV? Like any state, Vatican communication is subject to strict diplomatic and neutrality rules.

Until now, the Vatican has never been led by such a modern figure, adept at using contemporary digital platforms. Now, all we can do is wait… The state does have an official account on X, but it only has… 357 followers!
