Second-hand product enthusiasts should be thrilled about the new digital passport launched by Fnac Darty. Currently, it applies to second-hand home appliances.
A Clear Need for Transparency
Initiated in collaboration with ecosystem, this trailblazing initiative targets all manufacturers, distributors, and repair services with the goal to extend product lifespans by promoting re-purchase rather than disposal. The passport utilizes blockchain technology and covers about four thousand devices previously used in the Olympic Village.
Currently, while the second-hand market is booming in many sectors, this isn’t quite the case for home appliances. Indeed, consumers are somewhat wary of large appliances (returning a fridge for service is significantly more cumbersome than a smartphone).
How Does It Work?
However, given the current prices and inflation, more and more consumers would be interested in this market, provided there are more guarantees. It is with this perspective (and clearly to carve out a space in this segment) that this operation was launched. It’s worth noting that the organization ecosystem collects the eco-participation fee paid at the purchase of an electrical appliance for its future recycling.
In practice, it involves assigning each product a digital passport that will gather all the necessary information and trace the history of the appliance. The products will hence have their own QR code that will display on a unique and secure platform the following information: manufacture, sale, repair.
