The video was captured by Hugo Lassauce, a researcher from the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia, during an expedition in New Caledonia. While observing a group of leopard sharks, known to congregate in this area, he witnessed an unprecedented event.
For over an hour, two male sharks held a female by biting her pectoral fins. Then, one after the other, they mated with her. Each mating event was quite brief: 63 seconds for the first male, and 47 seconds for the second. Exhausted by the effort, the two males then lay motionless on the ocean floor while the female swam away.

“It’s rare to witness shark mating in the wild, but to see it with an endangered species – and to capture it on film – was so thrilling that we started cheering,” the researcher stated.
This sighting is indeed crucial for the conservation of the leopard shark, a species listed as “endangered” due to overfishing. Understanding their reproductive behavior in their natural habitat can aid in enhancing artificial insemination protocols, which are used in species reintroduction programs.
Sharks with Complex Sex Lives
