Motion detectors are quite handy but have some limitations preventing them from being effective for automations in certain scenarios. Home automation expert Aqara aims to tackle this issue with its new FP2 presence sensor, now available at a discount during a flash sale.
Aqara FP2 Presence Detector
Motion sensors are useful in many settings, such as automating the lighting when you enter a room. However, if you’ve set up such a system in a room where you might stay for extended periods without significant movement, like typing at a keyboard, you might have noticed that the lights turn off after a preset time, as minor movements aren’t enough to trigger the sensor again. Aqara has developed a promising solution with its new product.
Accurate Detection
The Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 operates on Wi-Fi and uses millimeter wave technology (or mmWave, also used in certain 5G modems), which can detect a presence even if the subject is not moving. This feature is crucial as it allows, for example, the light in an office to stay on as long as the user remains at their computer, and only turns off when they leave the room.
It also has the capability to detect a person falling, track movements of up to five individuals, and set up to 30 detection zones within a 40 square meter area through a dedicated app. The sensor supports HomeKit (and will also support Matter), Alexa, Google Home, and IFTTT, but it requires a USB-C connection, unlike some motion sensors that can operate on batteries. Additionally, the device includes a light sensor, doesn’t require an Aqara hub, and is IPX5 certified, making it suitable for bathroom installation.
