Sonnet Unveils Thunderbolt 5 Dock with Built-In SSD and Unique Features!

Thunderbolt 5 docks are increasingly entering the market, although prices remain relatively high for such accessories.

As the IBC2025 event approaches this September, Sonnet has unveiled the Echo 13, a Thunderbolt 5 dock featuring a plethora of ports and even an SSD! The design is quite appealing, featuring sleek black metal and the thermal dissipation is notably quiet. However, we do not yet know the size of the power supply, which is often… as bulky as the device itself.

A Well-Equipped Thunderbolt 5 Dock

Like many of its competitors, the Echo 13 includes a variety of standard ports, specifically

4 Thunderbolt 5 ports,
3 USB A 10Gbps ports
1 USB A 5 Gbps port

In 2025, one might expect USB C ports to be more useful than USB A, which are still quite prevalent. Most modern SSDs, for instance, generally support USB C. Yet, particularly in the audio field, USB A remains common.

Additionally, the dock includes a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port… at a time when 10G Ethernet is becoming the norm! This is quite surprising, as most routers now support outputs between 8 and 10Gbps. Thunderbolt 5 can handle these speeds without significantly slowing down other ports. This is still better than the Thunderbolt 5 Dock from Razer we recently reviewed, which was limited to just 1Gbps in Ethernet.

Moreover, a 3.5mm audio jack along with an SD 4.0 and a microSD slot are also included. Again, it would have been preferable to see CFast, which is more modern and suited for professionals.

Integrated SSD

Finally, in line with current trends (and quite convenient), there’s space to install an NVMe SSD, with a default option from Kingston available in 1, 2, or 4TB. The press release does not specify, but it should be possible to upgrade it later.

The dock supports speeds up to 6Gbps (which will also be the limit of the SSD) compared to just half that in Thunderbolt 3/4.

The price has not yet been announced.
